The Bangkok Post (Thailand) picked up a story about a recent University of the West graduate who will become a Buddhist chaplain for the U.S. Army. While the headline states Somya Malasri is a Buddhist monk, he is in fact a former monk who graduated from UWest’s M.Div. in Buddhist Chaplaincy program on May 15, 2010. You can read the article here.
UWest continues to wish Somya a fruitful career serving sentient beings in the Army or any other capacity. Somya is the first student to graduate from the M.Div. in Buddhist Chaplaincy program, which was launched in 2009.
