University of the West held a Mindfulness Event on Friday, November 4, 2011. This student-led event was co-organized and co-sponsored by the UW Contemplative Council, BudaWest, Chaplaincy Club, Student Association, and the Office of Student Life. Over fifty people attended.
We were treated to a wonderful talk on meditation and mindfulness by Venerable Kusala, who rode his motorcycle in the rain to get here. He also treated us to some blues harmonica! The meditators participating in the Sit-a-Thon raised over $2,000 for Buddhist Global Relief to support education for disadvantaged girls in Sri Lanka. The donations will provide them the opportunity and economic skills to lift themselves out of poverty. Despite the rain and drowsiness, twenty-five students were committed to meditate throughout the night!
Many students volunteered their time and abilities to lead meditation from all the major Buddhist traditions – Theravada, Mahayana, and Vajrayana. This was a truly cooperative effort. Thanks so much, everyone!
