Time Sensitive Information

For International Students

There are several application and paperwork deadlines international students need to be aware of. Here are some of the more important ones:

Optional Practical Training (OPT): Spring, 2017

Optional Practical Training (OPT): Spring, 2017

Application Timeline for May 13, 2017 Graduates

USCIS will begin accepting OPT Applications for May, 2017 graduates on or after, Feb. 15, 2017

USCIS Takes 90 Days to Process the OPT Application.

It is a good idea to start the OPT application process in late Jan., 2017.

Most May graduates will choose to start their OPT Employment in June, up to July 12, 2017. The employment period is for one year from the start date on the OPT card.

Once you graduate on May 13, 2017, you will be in your “60-Day Grace Period” until to July 12, 2017. Your OPT card needs to be dated to start no later than this date.

You can send in your OPT application anytime between Feb. 15-June 1, 2017. If you wait to apply until June, you will not be working for a full year, due to the 90-Day Processing time for your OPT application. You will need to send in your OPT application no later than April 1, 2017 in order for USCIS to receive the application, process it for 90 days and mail your OPT card back to you in time to start working by July 12, 2017, in order to work for a full year.

This OPT application can only be done with the DSO on campus. Please make an appointment with Leslie Bazzano at leslieb@uwest.edu in order to discuss the OPT application and get started.

Important Information for Exchange Students for Spring Semester, 2017

Important Information for Exchange Students for Spring Semester, 2017

A) Exchange students are not allowed to participate in the Work-Study Program on campus.
B) Guidelines for Exchange Students Returning to Their Home Countries After Their Program End Date:

  • You have 60 Days, known as your “Grace Period” from the end date on your I-20. So, if the end date is 05/13/2017, the end of your Grace Period is 07/12/2017.
  • You can stay in the US during these 60 days, and return to your home country before 07/12/2017
  • However, once you leave the US, during the Grace Period, to Mexico, Canada or any other country, you may not re-enter the US again and you will have to return to your home country from whatever country you are traveling in at that time.

Please take these facts into consideration when you are making travel plans upon completion of your program of study at University of the West.

This travel information also applies to students graduation from UWest on May 13, 2017.

Request for Reduced Course Enrollment: Spring Semester, 2017: Time Sensitive Information

The Reduced Course Enrollment From has to be submitted to Leslie Bazzano in AD103 before the Add/Drop Deadline of January 27, 2017. The ISS Office needs this form in order to register you properly in SEVIS.

The RCE Form is available in the bank of forms in the foyer of the Admissions/Registrar’s Office in AD102.

You will need to fill out your portion of the form, get the rest of the form filled out and signed by your Academic Advisor and return it to Leslie Bazzano in AD103 by January 27, 2017.

  1. You can only use this form for your last semester before graduation, if you have finished your other course work and have less than the required amount of course units left to complete for graduation. For example, Undergraduate Full-time units equals 12 credits/semester; for Graduate Students, the requirement is 9 credits/semester.
  2. You must also use the RCE form for each semester once you have finished your coursework for any Doctoral Program and you are in Continuous Enrollment until you reach Advanced Candidacy Status. What this means is that you have finished your qualifying exams and have paid your candidacy fee and are engaged in research for or the actual writing of your Dissertation.

Please make an appointment with me at leslieb@uwest.edu to discuss the Reduced Course Enrollment Form.
