Academic English
At UWest, carefully designed programs and an enthusiastic teaching faculty help students step into a new culture and expand their horizons.
English Intensive Program
UWest’s Academic English Program is designed to prepare international students for the linguistic and cultural demands of the American university classroom, in particular the degree programs at UWest. The English Intensive Program meets 20 hours a week for 16 weeks per semester (spring and fall) and for 6 weeks in the summer.
In our classes, highly qualified instructors help students improve their academic English skills at all levels: vocabulary and grammar, listening, class discussion and presentation skills, reading comprehension, and writing.
UWest understands that academic success depends not only on strong language skills but also on cross-cultural skills and awareness. These cultural proficiencies are included in our courses and, especially, in extracurricular activities in the greater Los Angeles area and surrounding communities.
Students in our Academic English program also enjoy full use of the UWest Library, Language and Computer labs, and the Student Success Center, where they can get extra support with presentations, essay writing, homework, and other skills.
Academic English Bridge Program
Once students have built a strong foundation, they move on to our Academic English Bridge Program, which allows them to begin degree-level coursework as they continue improving their writing and presentation skills in specialized courses. Cooperation between departments and student mentoring through program advisors provide additional support for students who are transitioning from Academic English into their degree programs.
P.A.C.E. Programs (Program in American Cultural Exchange)
UWest welcomes groups from many nations throughout the year, especially during the summer months and around lunar New Year. Our P.A.C.E. programs are customized to the age/educational level, profession, interests, and English level of the participants and are usually between two and six weeks in length. Groups can live on campus, or with local families in homestay arrangements. In addition to small interactive classes, students also enjoy exhilarating excursions and field trips to enhance English learning and immerse them into the American cultural experience.
