|Obtaining a Social Security Card|
You can only apply for a social security card if you receive employment. Initially, you can only work on-campus. After one academic year, you are eligible for paid internships which would allow you to work off-campus in a job relating to your field. After graduation, you are eligible for one year of full-time employment if you participate in Optional Practical Training (OPT).

For On-campus Employment
Since you are an International student, you will need a letter from the UWEST staff/administrator hiring you. You will also first need to fill out an employment application with Human Resources. Please bring a copy of that application and the original letter from your future employer (on campus) to the International Student Services Advisor (Jennifer Derry), AD103. I will then type you a DSO letter to take to Social Security along with your future employer’s letter and other relevant forms. I will help you with the Social Security Card application. We will make an appointment for you to pick up your letters and to go over your Social Security Card application at that time. Forms and directions will be supplied to you concerning how to get to the SSN office and what paperwork to bring to Social Security.
Once you have completed all required steps and forms, you can go to any Social Security Office. They do not take appointments, so be prepared to wait for a bit of time once you get there. Remember to take all your I-20’s, passport, F-1 Visa, I-94#, either on a white card in your Visa or printed and downloaded from www.cbp/i94, DSO letter, Employer letter, and completed Social Security Card application form when you go.
Once you apply, you will be given a receipt. Once you receive your SSN card in the mail, please bring a copy to the HR office. You may not begin work until you receive your SSN card in the mail. It is necessary for your letter from your employer to have a future date for your employment (at least 2-3 weeks in the future) and the statement on the same line as follows, [after the (future) date of employment]: and not until the Social Security card is received by the student.
