Admissions: Who are we?


Welcome to the Admissions Office Online Resource Center. Our job is to provide you with the right information and tools to successfully enter University of the West and to make the most of your abilities while here. You have taken the first step toward transforming your life.

 
Students from dozens of countries and from around the United States come to University of the West for the quality education, affordable tuition and the unique environment fostered by this school’s commitment to developing a better understanding between the East and the West.
 
Located in Rosemead, at the western edge of the beautiful San Gabriel Valley, University of the West is a safe and quiet campus within easy driving distance from downtown Los Angeles and other major attractions. But, what makes University of the West different is that it is the only Buddhist founded university in Los Angeles.
 
University of the West offers bachelor’s degrees in business administration, religious studies, psychology and English. Undergraduate students can explore a range of majors with these academic subjects, such as Buddhist studies, accounting, marketing, non profit organization and management, comparative religious studies, and more. English majors can follow a linguistics track or a literature track.
 
University of the West offers graduate and doctoral students master’s degrees in religious studies and psychology, with concentrations in Buddhist studies, comparative religious studies, Buddhist psychology and multicultural counseling.
 
University of the West is also home to the Institute for the Advanced Study of Chinese Buddhism and the Center for the Study of Minority and Small Business, offering advanced research opportunities for students.
 
And, University of the West is home to one of the most vibrant English as a Second Language (ESL) programs in the San Gabriel Valley or greater Los Angeles.
 
UWest also offers certificate programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Admission Process and Requirements


All students, regardless of their ethinicity, gender, faith, reed, political views, sexual orientation, or diability, are welcome to apply fo the University of the West.  Applicants are required to supply accurate and complete information on the application for admission form and all transcripts and test scores must be sent directly to the Office of Admissions.   Failure to file complete and authentic application documents may result in denial of admission.  

 

The application and fee is only valid for the semester that you indicate.  However, you may defer the application and fee for one time only by notifying the Admissions Office in writing fours weeks before the beginning day of the semester that is indicated on your application.  Otherwise, a new application fee will be required.

                                                         

                                                        

Requirements for Undergraduate Students

 

Applicants for admission to the Bachelor of Arts and certificate programs must submit evidence of graduation from high school or successful completion of its equivalent (e.g., GED).  Students who have not graduated from high school or completed its equivalent may be admitted on submitting evidence of completion of a minimum of 24 units with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or higher at a regionally accredited or state approved college.  Transfers from post-secondary school must submit an official transcript from each school, college or univeristy attended.

 

Requirements for Graduate Students

 

Applicants for admission as graduate students must submit evidence of completion of a bachelor degree from a regionally accredited or state approved college or a comparable foreign institution of higher learning, with a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or higher. 

 

Requirements for ESL and Open Enrollment

 

Applicants to English as a Second Language and Open Enrollment program must provide evidence of graduation from high school or its equivalent.  Applicants who have not graduated from high school or its equivalent may qualify for admission by completion of academic work at a regionally accredited or state approved school with a 2.0 or higher cumulative grade average or by being over 18 years of age.

Admissions Check List (For Undergraduate, Graduate, and Certificate Program)

 

The following admission and application procedures are for graduate and undergraduate students. New students who are looking for the admission into the ESL or Open Enrollment program should use a separated application form.


Requirements for Admission:

1.       Application Fee of $50 for domestic students or $100 for international students. (The application fee must accompany the application and is non-refundable.  Check or money order should be payable to University of the West).

2.       COMPLETED APPLICATION FORM (with signature);

3.       STATEMENT OF PURPOSE – two pages, typed and double-spaced;

4.       OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS from each school, college or university attended;

5.       COPIES OF DIPLOMA for all degrees earned;

6.       THREE LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION;

7.       Verification of English proficiency (for International Students or non-native English-speaking students)

·         Official TOEFL score report with a minimum score of 61 on the Internet Based Test (iBT), 173 on the Computer Based Test (CBT) or 500 on the Paper BasedTest (PBT). This is applicable only to international students who were educated at institutions where English was not the main language of instruction. In general, all international applicants admitted to an undergraduate program will also be required to take the English Placement Test administered by the Department of Languages.

·         Or; official IELTS score report with a minimum score of 5.5. This is applicable only to international students who were educated at institutions where English was not the main language of instruction. In general, all international applicants admitted to an undergraduate program will also be required to take the English Placement Test administered by the Department of Languages.

·         Applicants who are not international students and whose native language is not English are required to take the English Placement Test administered by the Department of Languages.

·         Based on their score on the English Placement Test, students may either enter their degree program directly or be required to further improve their English skills by enrolling in Academic English courses, such as ENGL 100A, English 100B, or other suitable courses. These students usually may concurrently enroll in two courses in their major according to departmental advisement.

·         Students with three or more years of successful participation in a college or university academic program where English was the main language of instruction are generally not required to submit a TOEFL score, IELTS score or to take the English Placement Test.

English as a second Language (ESL) Admissions Check List

 

The following admission and application procedures are for ESL students.
           

1.       Completed ESL Application Form

2.       Completed Financial Certification & Financial Sponsor Agreement Form

3.       An official copy of the applicant's High School Transcript or evidence of completion of its equivalent and, if applicable, Official Transcripts From Each College Attended to be sent from the Registrar of each institution. Official transcripts are not required of domestic students applying for admission to ESL who are over 18 years of age

4.       Bank verification with minimum of US$7,000 (for four months)

5.       Application fee of US$ 50 for domestic students or $100 for international students                         (Application fees are non-refundable)

6.       Copy of the first page of your Passport/Visa/I-94 (if applicable)

7.       Copies of previous I-20 (applicable to transferring international students only)

8.       Signature on application form (pages 4 &5)

9.       Other documents (if applicable)
