|UWest Successfully Accomplished this Year’s VITA Program|

UWest’s Volunteers for Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program just accomplished its tasks. Since January, the program helped more than 450 people file their 2011 Federal and CA State Income Tax Returns; among them more than15% are UWest students/alumni and staff. More than 20 volunteers, including UWest faculty, students/alumni and several volunteers from the local community, participated in this service program.
This program again has been a great success. Through this program, UWest staff/students and local residents received free tax filing services. Volunteers from the UWest and local community further learned the latest US tax laws. Also, the program promotes the University and improves the university’s relationship with the local communities.
The Department of Business Administration at UWest started this VITA program in 2008. The program is partnered with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). In 2011, the program helped about 400 people. Under the supervision of Professor Bill Chen, all volunteers first passed the required tests before they helped people file their tax returns.
