Rev. Dr. Richard Rose will give a free public lecture on liberation theology's role in public policy at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13 at the University of the West campus. The lecture is sponsored by the Institute for Chinese Buddhist Studies and the Religious Studies Department at University of the West.

Liberation theology is derived from Jesus’ mission and purpose as described in the Gospel of Luke (Luke 4:18, 19). Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., exemplified this same mission and purpose in bringing about positive social change in the United States during the second half of the twentieth century. This lecture will explore the connections between the liberation motif seen in Jesus’ ministry and that of Rev. King. By focusing on the educational crisis occurring in many inner cities, the lecture will delineate ways in which liberation theology can be an effective means of personal and social liberation today.

Liberation is also one of University of the West's expected learning outcomes for its students.

Rev. Rose is a professor of religion and philosophy at the University of La Verne. He completed the Master of Divinity degree at Howard University School of Divinity and received his Ph.D. degree from the Claremont Graduate School. His dissertation is titled “Howard Thurman’s Life and Thought: Implications for Religious Pluralism and Interfaith Dialogue.” Dr. Rose’s scholarship focuses on interfaith dialogue and the pivotal role of new educational models in advancing social justice and inter-religious understanding.
