Summer and Fall 2014 Registration FAQ (ESL Students)
MAINTAINING F-1 STATUS
Students attending on an F-1 visa must meet the following standards to maintain status:
- Take classes each fall and spring semester. Summer is a standard period of non-enrollment so F-1 students do not need to take classes in summer.
- Enroll full-time: 20 hours (5 ESL classes) is considered full-time.
- Meet the minimum gpa and attendance requirement for your program: 2.0 gpa and more than 80% attendance rate.
HOW DO I CHOOSE MY CLASSES?
After you complete your EPT at the end of this term, you will meet with your ESL teachers to select classes.
- If you are continuing your ESL classes in summer, you will select only summer classes.
- If you are taking the summer off, you will select fall classes.
CAN I REGISTER ONLINE?
After your classes are chosen, you may enter your approved schedule directly through the Portal. This option is open for students who have no financial or other holds. If there is a hold on your record, you will need to register in person at the Registrar’s office after clearing the hold. The late registration fee may not be waived if you fail to register due to a hold on your account.
WHAT IF I DON’T REGISTER BY MAY 16?
Students who do not register for next term will be considered to have voluntarily withdrawn from the University. If you didn’t plan on taking time off, you will need to petition for reinstatement, and if the petition is approved, you will need to pay the $50.00 Late Registration Fee. This fee is in addition to the Late Payment Fee that will be assessed by the Bursar’s office if you do not make your payment on time.
Note for students on an F-1 Visa – the University is required to report all F-1 students who do not maintain their fulltime enrollment. Delaying your registration may have a serious impact on your F-1 status.
I MISSED THE DEADLINE TO REGISTER. CAN I ATTEND THE SUMMER SESSION or FALL SEMESTER?
You will need permission from both the Dean of Student Affairs and your department chair. If you have already been dropped you will need to petition for reinstatement too. In addition, you will be required to pay the $50.00 Late Registration Fee.
DO I NEED TO PAY WHEN I REGISTER FOR CLASSES?
While we encourage students to pay when they register, we understand that sometimes this may not be possible. To avoid the Late Payment Fee of $100.00, you must make your payment NO LATER THAN 4:30 pm on the first day of classes. You should expect to wait in line if you put off paying until the last minute.
I AM THINKING ABOUT TAKING THE SUMMER SESSION and/or FALL SEMESTER OFF. IS THIS A PROBLEM?
If you are an F-1 student, you are required to maintain full-time enrollment in both the fall and spring semesters. If you are considering taking the summer off, you do not need to take any special steps other than registering for Fall Semester. If you want to take Fall Semester off, be sure to meet with your International Student Services Advisor as regulations allow time off only for significant cause.
