Given the great success of our past three years’ Volunteers for Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, we have decided to continue our participation in this valuable service program. In this program, volunteers from UWest will help local residents file 2010 Federal Income Tax Returns as well as California State Income Tax Returns. This will be a good opportunity for our students to have some kind of hands-on experience in accounting and taxes. Through this VITA program, we can directly help local communities, establish and improve our relationship with them, and continuously improve our reputation. All students as well as alumni are very welcome to be volunteers of the program. Some knowledge in accounting/taxes is helpful, but not necessary.
Services will be offered to the eligible residents on and off campus through e-filing from the end of January until mid-April, 2011. The participants/volunteers can pick up their available dates/time to offer help (not necessary every week or every time). All volunteers will be trained and certified before offering services. We plan to offer training sessions in early January 2011 and certify all participants by mid-January 2011.
Those interested should contact the Department of Business Administration at (626)571-8811 Ext. 125 or email Dr. Bill Chen at firstname.lastname@example.org. In your correspondence include your name, phone, and email address. The deadline to sign up is Friday, December 17, 2010.
