How to apply for the F-1 visa

After you have been admitted to University of the West, you will receive an I-20 form from UWest after sending us proof of sufficient financial resources. Your I-20 is required when applying for an F-1 student visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate and for entry into the United States. This I-20 is created in a government database called the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) and is proof that your record is in the SEVIS system and you are eligible to apply for an F-1 visa. The I-20 form includes your SEVIS ID number, which is the number in the upper corner above the bar code, (usually starting with N). Thoroughly review your I-20 to make sure all of the information is correct. Sign the form at the bottom of page 1.

All new students coming in F-1 status must pay a one-time SEVIS fee prior to applying for their visa, and must submit the SEVIS fee receipt as part of their application. You can make your payment on Department of Homeland Security.

If you have any questions regarding the F-1 visa or I-20, contact International Student Advisor, Ms. Muge Meisenholder, at

When to arrive

You may enter the U.S. in initial I-20 status (meaning you are a new international student, not a SEVIS transfer student) a maximum of 30 days before the program start date on your I-20.

You may be able to receive permission to arrive late (after your program start date) if you encounter an emergency situation and your travel to the U.S. is slightly delayed.

If you have any questions regarding the F-1 visa or I-20, contact International Student Advisor, Ms. Muge Meisenholder, at

Student transfer SEVIS record to UWest (currently studying in the U.S. only)

If your F-1 status is currently ‘SEVIS Active’ at another institution in the U.S., you may be able to transfer your SEVIS record from your current school to UWest. Your current school DSO confirms you are eligible for transferring in active status by completing UWest’s Transfer Release form. Please return this form to Admissions Specialist, Ms. Henna Hung at
