English for Academic Purposes
English for Academic Purposes
The English for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program is designed to meet the needs of English language learning students who are interested in attending UWest degree or other U.S. university degree programs.
The EAP helps students acquire the language skills and cultural understanding necessary for academic success while living in the United States.
Students from a variety of backgrounds come together in small classes to study and practice all fundamental English skills in meaningful and authentic contexts to develop critical thinking and independent learning skills necessary for college.
The EAP Program is offered during the Fall and Spring semesters that run for 16 weeks each.

ELI Learning Objectives
UWest ELI Learning Objectives (LOs) for the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) & Academic English Bridge (AEB) Programs as adopted from the Pearson Education’s Global Scale of English (GSE) EAP in order to:
- Define each level of study for EAP & AEB students at UWest.
- Define “can do” language skills students should be able to do at the end of each level of study.
- Provide EAP & AEB faculty appropriate level descriptors design and assessment.

ELI’s Learning Objectives (LOs) are integrated into each core competency course (i.e. reading, writing, oral communication) so that students can know what language skills they should be able to do by the end of each class.
