Making of the Chinese Buddhist Canon Available as Community Ed. Course

Written By University of the West Author

Today UWest is pleased to announce the availability of Dr. Lewis Lancaster’s Religious Studies course, “Making of the Chinese Buddhist Canon,” as a Community Education class. Dr. Lancaster’s classes have typically been one of the more popular classes at UWest. Offering this class as a CE course makes Dr. Lancaster more assessable to a wider audience.

“Making of the Chinese Buddhist Canon” will cover the creation of the Chinese language version of Buddhist canonic texts. Starting in the second century, translations, commentaries, and East Asian redactions form the Chinese Buddhist Canon that has grown to a library of texts now containing thousands of documents. During the course, the narrative of how this remarkable collection of religious texts came into existence will be the focus of lectures and research. Topics of discussion will range from exploring the emergence of Buddhist material in India, the spread of those materials through Central Asia and the coastal routes from the sub-continent to East Asia, the technologies used in the process of shifting the teachings from oral to written and recently digital versions.

The course is both remote and online, and will include a certificate of participation for those taking it as a CE class. For more info and to enroll, please go here.
